Here’s some help for finding what you may need during camp.

Grocery stores (and Alko)

Note. In Finland alcohol is only sold out from 9 am to 9 pm (21:00). It doesn’t matter if the shop is open until midnight; if you haven’t paid for your beer by 21:00, you won’t get it. Also, anything stronger than 5.5 % (strong beer, wine, bubbly, spirits…) is only sold at Alko, the alcohol monopol store – and it’s closed on Sundays. A grocery store will sell you beer and other alcohol on a Sunday as long as it’s not too late in the evening or too early in the morning.

Nearest shopping: Inkoo

S-Market Inkoo is located 8 km from the site. It’s easy to find: drive back to the big road (51), turn right (towards Helsinki), drive for 5.7 km, turn right towards Inkoo/Ingå and go on for about 1.2 km, at which point the parking lot and the shop are on your left. Check the link for opening times, during Cudgel the shop is open until 9 pm every day, but morning opening time depends on the weekday.

Alko in Inkoo is located further on, in Strand by the port. Just continue straight on into Inkoo and when you get to the sea, you are there. This is a small shop, so it’s only open 10-18 on weekdays and 10-15 on Saturdays. They’ll certainly be able to sell you cheap and mid-range wine and some bubblies and spirits, but don’t expect a large selection.

There are also some cafés and restaurants down by the port and in Strand, but because it is a busy summer destination for those coming by boat, the prices may not be that cheap.

Nearest bigger shopping: Karjaa

Karjaa center, roughly 16 km from site, offers quite a bit more. There’s a S-Market (open until midnight every day!), a K-Supermarket and even a Lidl. The local Alko is located in the same building with the K-Supermarket and open ”normally”, 10-21 on weekdays and 10-18 on Saturdays. To find all these shops, get down to the big road (51), turn left (westwards), drive on 51 for about 11 km, then follow the signs into Karjaa/Karis (you’ll drive briefly on road 25), and you’ll be right on Ratakatu where all the shops are. It may be easiest to just park at one of them (Lidl has a parking lot, the others have garages) and walk to the others, unless you have lots to carry.

Really big supermarkets: Kirkkonummi
(handy from Helsinki direction)

If you need a really big shop or just want to see a typical large Finnish supermarket, drive 30 minutes towards Helsinki for Kirkkonummi, it has both a Prisma and a Citymarket next to the highway. If you arrive to Cudgel from Helsinki, Prisma Kirkkonummi is the fastest and easiest stop on the way and will cater to all your needs. It doesn’t even matter if you are there late (or early), it is open 6 am to midnight Mon-Sat and 8 am to midnight on Sundays (Citymarket is slightly less generous). Alko Kirkkonummi is in the same building with Prisma. Finding these shops is easy, because they are visible from the highway: coming from the site, drive on 51 towards Helsinki (so turn right when arriving to the big road) for 31 km, then get off at the junction for Kirkkonummi and follow the signs towards Kirkkonummi. Prisma is first right (just after the building), for Citymarket you have to head a bit further in and then you’ll see it on your right. When coming from Helsinki direction, turn right at Kirkkonummi junction and you are already next to Prisma.

Pharmacies and medical assistance

Note. In Finland all medication, also over-the-counter stuff, must be bought at a pharmacy. You can find band aids and vitamins in a grocery store, but e.g. painkillers are only sold at a pharmacy. There are also limitation on how much ibuprofen etc. you can buy at any one time.

At the event there will be a named chirurgeon for each day who can help you with small problems and also help you to contact medical personnel off-site. If you need medical assistance please contact the chirurgeon or event stewards.

Emergency number in Finland is 112. The address of site is: Kavalahden leirikeskus, Björnvikintie 109, INKOO. There is a first aid kit and a heart defibrillator at the Troll.

Inkoo pharmacy

There’s a small pharmacy in Inkoo, Ingå Apotek/Inkoon Apteekki. It is located in the same building with S-Market (see above) and thus easy to find. It is only open on Mon-Fri 10-18 and Sat 9-15, but if you make it there during the opening time, they’ll have all the basic medication you may need.

Karjaa pharmacy

Karis Apotek/Karjaan Apteekki is not located on Ratakatu where all the grocery stores are, you’ll have to walk from the grocery stores to the promenade Kauppiaankatu (can’t park quite next to it, so if you can walk, it’s probably easiest). Also, even though the website says it is open on 12-14 on Sundays, it has often been closed on July Sundays – so you may want to call them and check before driving if you specifically need a pharmacy on a Sunday. Otherwise it is open only slightly better than Inkoo, 9-19 on weekdays and 9-15 on Saturdays.

Kirkkonummi pharmacies

In Kirkkonummi you have two pharmacies near the highway: one in Prisma, one next to Citymarket. Kirkkonummen Uusi Apteekki in the Prisma building has fairly generous opening times (Mon-Fri 9-20, Sat 9-18, Sun 10-18), and it definitely has service on every single Sunday. Kirkkonummen 1. apteekki is located in ”Kirsikka” center right next to Citymarket. It is also open every day, Mon-Fri 8-19, Sat 9-17, Sun 10-16.
Tip: If you need single-use cold packs, at least previously the sports section at Prisma has been cheaper than the pharmacy next door!

Inkoo medical center

The closest medical center is Inkoon terveysasema (8 km), but it’s only open 8 to 4 pm on weekdays. During the previous years they have treated our camp guests, stitching up small wounds and giving prescriptions. Most or all of the staff speak Swedish, others may want to take along an interpreter for safety sake.

Nearest hospitals with emergency clinics

Raasepori hospital in Tammisaari has an emergency department if you fall ill suddenly or otherwise need urgent medical attention. However, they ask you to call Medical Helpline’s toll-free number 116 117 before going to the hospital. The distance is about 33 km, 30 minutes. Road 51 west, then road 25 towards Tammisaari, then follow the hospital signs.

Lohja hospital in Lohja also has an emergency clinic. It is slightly closer to the event site, 27 km/25 minutes, but finding it can be slightly more complicated. They have the same instructions: ”Before coming to the emergency department, call the Medical Helpline at 116 117.”

Raasepori treats patients of all ages, but Lohja primarily treats those who are over 16. Children may get sent to Kirkkonummi clinic (until 8 pm) or Jorvi hospital in Espoo. Medical helpline at 116 117 will be able to advise on where to go so you don’t have to do any extra driving.

Nearby private healthcare

If your travel insurance covers private healthcare, you have a card you can pay with, and Inkoo medical centre doesn’t have time for you, you can try Mehiläinen Karjaa (Mon-Thu 8-16 during our camp week). You’ll have to book the visit in advance either by phone or through their online booking system (phone is probably easier if you don’t read Finnish). There’s also Mehiläinen Tammisaari that is bigger, but also open only 8-16 Mon-Fri. Another option is Terveystalo Kirkkonummi in Kirsikka next to Citymarket, open now Mon-Thu 7.45-18 and Fri 7.45-16. Again, book in advance, either online or by phone.

Both Mehiläinen and Terveystalo are well-known private providers. Expect a visit to a general practitioner to cost somewhere in the range of 60-100 euros, more if for example lab samples are needed. Many travel insurances will cover something like that, but check first.

Homewares, clothing, basic electronics

Forgot to pack enough sheets? Need a new towel? Or a t-shirt. Inkoo may not do it for you, Karjaa might, Kirkkonummi definitely will.

Kodin tavaratalo, Inkoo and Karjaa

Kodin tavaratalo, literally ”home warehouse”, is a small chain of shops that sell miscellaneous stuff for homes. So you may find there a barbecue or those sheets or even knitting yarn, but probably not that underwear you forgot at home. The one in Inkoo is next to S-Market, so if you go for groceries anyway, you can easily pop in and take a look.

Tokmanni Karjaa

When you have turned towards Karjaa from 51, take the very next right onto Ensikuja to get to Tokmanni. Tokmanni profiles itself as a cheap homeware store and you can find all kinds of stuff there from plastic crates to phone chargers to dry goods. If you are not too picky with the quality or origin of the stuff you are looking for, this could well be your one-stop-shop for all those needed non-groceries, whether it’s clothing, bedding, storage, or craft supplies. Tokmanni is open on all weekdays, so Sunday won’t stop you from getting your stuff.

Jysk Karjaa

If you don’t turn into Karjaa from road 25 but continue straigth for a bit more, you can get to Jysk on Lepinpellonkatu (next to K-Rauta). Jysk only sells homeware like furniture and bedding, but if you are after a good (and reasonably priced) pillow or duvet or even a sleeping bag, it may be the place to go. Note that while this Jysk is open on weekends, it closes early (Sat 10-16, Sun 12-16).

Prisma and Citymarket in Kirkkonummi

If you go to either of these big supermarkets anyway (eg. on the way to the site from Helsinki), they both carry a selection of cheap-to-mid-priced basic necessities. Prisma tends to have a bigger and more varied non-food section (including sports, camping, hardware) and it can also be slightly cheaper, but you can find basic clothing and homeware also in Citymarket. Both also carry a selection of electronics like headphones and phone chargers, but in general you are more likely to find a tea kettle at Prisma than Citymarket (we don’t know exactly how the Kirkkonummi ones compare).

Hardware shops

Cudgel is a bit special in the sense that you may find yourself wanting a piece of wood or nuts and bolts or a certain too. None of the tool shops in Finland are perfect, but you have several options to try within half-an-hour’s drive.

Of the shops mentioned above, you might find tools in Kodin tavaratalo, you will find tools and some screws and things in Tokmanni, and Prisma also usually has a small department for that kind of things. But there are also several ”real” hardware stores within reach.

Inkoo: K-Supermarket Lantis

Disclaimer: No personal experience! But apparently K-Supermarket Lantis that is slightly off the beaten path is not just a grocery store, but also a hardware store that even sells planks etc. It’s only 10 minutes from the site, so it might be worth checking out. When you have turned off 51 towards Inkoo, take second left ”Pikkunummentie”, drive for 600 m, take slight left onto ”Suurkirkontie” and drive for another 350 m, and then the shop is on your right. Note that Lantis is only open 9-19 on weekdays and 9-15 on Saturdays, it’s closed on Sundays.

Karjaa: K-Rauta

K-Rauta is one of the biggest hardware store chains in Finland. K-Rauta Karjaa is on road 25, past the Karjaa junction, next to Jysk (you can also get there from the grocery stores in the center: drive all the way to the end of Ratakatu and then turn left onto 111, go through one roundabout, then take left to Lepinpellonkatu in a roundabout with lots of gas stations). K-Rauta is open 7-19 on weekdays, 9-16 on Saturdays and 11-15 on Sundays.

Kirkkonummi: K-Rauta

If you are heading from the site to Kirkkonummi anyway, K-Rauta Kirkkonummi is conveniently located one junction before the supermarkets. This is a big K-Rauta store. You should see the store on the left just before you need to turn left onto ”Purokummuntie”. The sign at this junction says ”Munkinmäki/Munkkulla”, so just switch to the left lane to turn, and after getting onto Purokummuntie take next left to get to the shop. This K-Rauta is open 7-19 on weekdays, 9-17 on Saturdays and 12-16 on Sundays.
